What is Augment Code?

Augment Code is an AI coding assistant built around deep codebase understanding. When you open a project, its Context Engine indexes the whole repository: source code, documentation, configuration files, dependencies, commit history and even related repositories. That index is what separates it from assistants that only see the open file, and it supports multi-repo setups, so teams working across microservices get answers that reflect cross-project dependencies. Augment runs as an extension for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, with a chat panel grounded in your codebase, multi-file editing and context-aware pull request descriptions. Every paid plan also includes a Coding Agent, the Auggie CLI (which brings Augment's agent, context engine and tools to the terminal), MCP support and Cosmos, a platform that combines custom triggers with specialized agents to automate work such as PR review. Inline completions, once a headline feature, were deprecated on March 31, 2026 for non-Enterprise plans. Augment is SOC 2 Type II compliant and does not train on customer code.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. You describe a task in plain language, and it reads the relevant parts of your codebase, plans the change, edits files across the project, runs shell commands and test suites, reads the errors, fixes what failed and re-runs the tests. It works directly with git: it stages changes, writes commit messages, creates branches and opens pull requests. Claude Code started in the terminal and now runs on several surfaces that share the same engine: the CLI, a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, a desktop app and the web. It connects to external tools through MCP, reads project instructions from a CLAUDE.md file, and supports skills, hooks and subagents. For automation, it runs in GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD and can take tasks from Slack. It is included with Claude Pro and Max subscriptions, or billed per token through the Anthropic API.

Key differences at a glance

These tools overlap more than their labels suggest: both now sell an agent, a CLI and MCP support. The differences that matter most are these:

  • -- Context: Augment builds a persistent index of your repo and related repos; Claude Code explores the codebase on demand for each task.
  • -- Where it lives: Augment is IDE-first (VS Code, JetBrains) with a CLI added; Claude Code is terminal-first with IDE, desktop and web surfaces added.
  • -- Billing basis: Augment charges one flat price for up to 50 seats with pooled usage; Claude Code is a per-person subscription or pay-per-token API.
  • -- Autonomy: Claude Code is built around end-to-end task execution (test, fix, commit); Augment centres on context-grounded chat and agent work inside the editor.
  • -- Automation: Augment's Cosmos wires triggers to specialized agents; Claude Code automates through GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, routines and Slack.
  • -- Score: Claude Code rates 4.6/5 in our review; Augment Code rates 4.3/5.

Pricing comparison

Augment Code has no free plan. Its paid plans are flat monthly prices rather than per-seat charges: Standard at $20/month covers up to 50 seats with $20 of usage included across LLM, Context Engine and compute, and Business at $100/month covers up to 50 seats with $100 of usage included. Extra usage on both is pay-as-you-go top-ups. Enterprise is custom-priced with unlimited users. Standard and Business share the same feature list, so the upgrade trigger is usage: move to Business when the team regularly burns through Standard's $20.

Claude Code is not on Claude's free plan. It is included in Claude Pro at $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front), and in Max from $100/month. Team and Enterprise plans include it too, and developers who want to pay by usage can use Anthropic API billing, pay per token. Pro gives light Claude Code use with lower caps; our review found heavy daily work usually needs Max or the API, where token costs vary with task size.

The billing basis is the real difference. For one developer, both cost $20 a month billed monthly. For a team of five, Augment Standard is still $20/month in total, while five Claude Pro seats are $100/month billed monthly. The catch is that Augment's included usage is shared by the whole team, so a busy team will buy top-ups or move to Business at $100/month.

Pros & Cons

Augment Code

  • Indexes the whole repo, including docs, commit history and related repos, so answers reflect your real architecture
  • Fast indexing even on large monorepos
  • Flat pricing for up to 50 seats instead of per-seat charges
  • Coding Agent, Auggie CLI, MCP and Cosmos included on every paid plan
  • SOC 2 Type II compliant, and it does not train on customer code
  • No free plan; every tier is paid
  • Included usage is capped at the plan amount ($20 or $100 a month), so heavier use needs top-ups
  • Inline completions were deprecated for non-Enterprise plans on March 31, 2026
  • Newer product with a smaller community and fewer integrations

Claude Code

  • The most capable agentic coding tool in our reviews, strong on complex multi-file refactors
  • Autonomous test-and-fix loop reduces manual debugging
  • Git integration: commits, branches and pull requests
  • Runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app and the web
  • MCP, CLAUDE.md, skills, hooks and CI integrations make it highly extensible
  • Not on Claude's free plan
  • Pro's lower caps suit light use only; heavy use means Max from $100/mo or the API
  • API costs are hard to predict on large tasks
  • Learning curve for writing task descriptions that produce good results
  • Not built for quick inline completions

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Augment Code if you:

  • → Work on a large, multi-repo or microservice codebase where context is the bottleneck
  • → Want the assistant inside VS Code or JetBrains rather than a separate agent
  • → Need one flat bill for a team of up to 50 people
  • → Want trigger-driven automations such as PR review through Cosmos

Choose Claude Code if you:

  • → Want to hand off whole tasks: refactors, migrations, features and bug fixes
  • → Are comfortable in the terminal, or want the same agent in your IDE, desktop or browser
  • → Rely on git, CI and MCP integrations in your workflow
  • → Already pay for Claude Pro or Max, which include it

Bottom Line

Neither tool has a free plan and both start at $20 a month, so the choice comes down to how you work and how you are billed. Claude Code (4.6/5) is the stronger pick for autonomous work, such as refactors, migrations and test-and-fix loops, and it now runs in your IDE as well as the terminal. Augment Code (4.3/5) is the better fit for teams on large or multi-repo codebases who want an index-grounded assistant in VS Code or JetBrains and one flat price for up to 50 seats. The two can also run side by side: Augment for understanding a sprawling system, Claude Code for executing the change.

Frequently asked questions

Augment Code vs Claude Code, which one should I pick?

Pick Claude Code if you want an autonomous agent that plans multi-file changes, runs tests and shell commands, fixes failures and commits to git, from the terminal or from its VS Code, JetBrains, desktop and web surfaces. Pick Augment Code if your team works on a large or multi-repo codebase and wants its Context Engine, which indexes source, docs, config, commit history and related repositories, behind chat and agent work in VS Code or JetBrains. Claude Code scores 4.6/5 in our review and Augment Code scores 4.3/5.

Is Augment Code or Claude Code cheaper?

Both start at $20 a month, but the billing basis differs. Augment Code's Standard plan is $20/mo flat and Business is $100/mo flat, each for up to 50 seats with that dollar amount of usage included and shared, plus pay-as-you-go top-ups. Claude Code is priced per person: Claude Pro is $20/mo billed monthly or $17/mo billed annually, Max starts at $100/mo, or you pay per token through the Anthropic API. For a team of five, Augment Standard is $20/mo in total while five Claude Pro seats are $100/mo billed monthly, but Augment's $20 of usage is shared across the whole team.

Does Augment Code or Claude Code have a free plan?

No. Augment Code has no free plan, and every tier is paid, starting with Standard at $20/mo. Claude Code is not included in Claude's free plan, so you need Claude Pro, Max, a Team or Enterprise plan, or Anthropic API billing to use it.

Can Claude Code run inside VS Code or JetBrains like Augment Code?

Yes. Anthropic's docs list a VS Code extension with inline diffs and plan review, and a JetBrains plugin with interactive diff viewing, alongside the terminal CLI, a desktop app and the web. Augment Code works the other way round: it started as a VS Code and JetBrains extension and now adds the Auggie CLI for the terminal.

Does Augment Code still offer inline code completions?

Only on Enterprise. Augment's documentation says support for inline completions was deprecated on March 31, 2026 for non-Enterprise plans, so Standard and Business users get chat, the Coding Agent, the CLI and Cosmos instead. Claude Code is not built for keystroke autocomplete either; it works on whole tasks.

Which is better for a large codebase?

Augment Code is built around this problem. Its Context Engine indexes the whole repository, including documentation, configuration, dependencies, commit history and related repositories, so answers can draw on cross-project context. Claude Code navigates the codebase on demand for each task and can make coordinated changes across many files, which suits large refactors and migrations. Teams that mostly ask questions about a sprawling multi-repo system lean to Augment; teams that want big changes executed lean to Claude Code.

Can I use Augment Code and Claude Code together?

Yes. Claude Code runs in a terminal or in its own IDE extension, so it can sit next to Augment Code's VS Code or JetBrains extension on the same project. The cost is two paid plans, from $20 a month each.
