What is Character.AI?

Character.AI is an entertainment app, run by Character Technologies, Inc., for chatting with AI Characters that users create and share. Each Character is built from a name, avatar, voice, greeting, tags, tagline, description and a definition that sets its personality, backstory and speech patterns; the definition can be public or hidden, and a Character can be published for the community or kept private. Around the chat, Character.AI offers Character Calls for two-way voice conversations, a library of Voices, Imagine Chat for creating images with your Characters, AvatarFX videos and a social Feed. Memory pins and, in beta for c.ai+ subscribers, Lorebooks help Characters keep track of a story or a shared world. In 2026 it added c.ai Books, which makes classic novels playable, (c.ai) series, short studio-made microdramas whose Characters adults can then chat with, and (c.ai) Comics, which turns chats into multi-page comic books using Charms, its in-app currency. Every chat carries a disclaimer that the Character is not a real person and that what it says should be treated as fiction.

Since late 2025, users under 18 cannot have open-ended chats with Characters. Character.AI began removing that access in the US on November 24, 2025, and now runs its own age assurance technology and an in-house age estimation model. Teens keep formats such as c.ai Series, Feed and Comics, and parents whose email is connected to a teen's account can see the teen's activity through Parental Insights.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI assistant for writing, research, coding, analysis and image creation. The free plan runs GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, and includes web search, file and image uploads, data analysis, image creation, voice, a Think option and access to GPTs, with separate limits on those tools. Paid plans raise the limits. Plus adds GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI describes as its most capable model, and GPT-5.6 Sol, along with expanded deep research, memory, Codex for coding tasks and ChatGPT Work, which completes multi-step tasks using your files, apps and tools.

ChatGPT is a single assistant whose tone you set with a personality, such as Friendly, Candid or Quirky, and custom instructions; OpenAI says a personality changes how ChatGPT communicates, not what it can do or the safety rules it follows. It runs on the web, iOS and Android, with a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. OpenAI's terms require users to be at least 13 (or their country's minimum age), with a parent's or guardian's permission under 18, and ChatGPT for Teens adds age-appropriate protections and optional parental controls for eligible accounts that ChatGPT identifies as under 18.

Character.AI has three tiers. Free gives unlimited messaging with ads, slow mode, 15 memory pins and the basic chat styles (PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr). (c.ai) lite starts at $4.99 a month, with prices that vary by region, and adds a daily allowance of premium chat-style messages, fewer ads, 30 memory pins, a detailed usage view and chat customization. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month, or $94.99 a year billed annually, 21% less than twelve monthly payments ($119.88). It removes ads and slow mode and adds unlimited use of the premium chat styles DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, the best memory tier, advanced Lorebook tools, priority access to features, 20% bonus Charms and premium support. Prices are in USD and may vary by region.

ChatGPT Free includes unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, with limits on uploads, image generation, voice, deep research, memory, Codex and ChatGPT Work. Go is $8 a month (US price; localized in some markets) and adds more messages with tools, more uploads and image creation, and longer memory; it may include ads. Plus is $20 a month and adds GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 Sol, expanded deep research, memory, Codex and ChatGPT Work, with no ads. Pro starts at $100 a month: Pro $100 gives 5x Plus's usage and Pro $200 gives 20x, and on September 10, 2026, OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200. Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly, with no annual option. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually (two users minimum) or $25 per user per month billed monthly.

Because everyday chat is unlimited on both free plans, the entry paid plans mostly buy extras: premium chat styles, more memory and fewer ads on (c.ai) lite, and higher tool limits and longer memory on ChatGPT Go. GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 Sol start at Plus.

A worked example for one person over a year: c.ai+ billed annually costs $94.99, against $119.88 for twelve monthly payments. ChatGPT Plus costs $240 for twelve months, since OpenAI bills it monthly, and Go costs $96. Using both, c.ai+ (annual) with ChatGPT Go comes to $190.99 a year, and c.ai+ (annual) with ChatGPT Plus comes to $334.99 a year, before any regional pricing or taxes.

Bottom Line

Character.AI (4.4/5) is the better fit for adults who want roleplay, fandom and interactive stories with AI Characters, with unlimited free messaging, free two-way voice calls and c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. ChatGPT (4.8/5) is the better fit for getting things done, from writing and research to coding and images, with a free plan, Go at $8 and Plus at $20 a month.
