What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, and in 2026 it is built around three ways of working. Chat handles questions, brainstorming and back-and-forth. ChatGPT Work takes a larger task, such as a deck, a spreadsheet, a research report or a project plan, and carries it through to a result you can review and download. Codex brings developer tools for debugging, running tests and reviewing pull requests. Around those sit the everyday tools: web search that shows results and citations in the chat, file and image uploads, image generation and editing, voice conversations, projects, and memory that carries useful context from earlier chats, managed in Settings > Personalization. The Free plan gives unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails. Plus and Pro add GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI calls its most capable model for complex work across code, apps and research. ChatGPT runs on the web, iOS and Android, and as a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux.

What is Pi AI?

Pi is a free personal AI made by Inflection AI, a public benefit corporation led by CEO Sean White. Inflection calls Pi "the world's first personal intelligence" and pitches it for conversations with emotional intelligence: venting, thinking out loud, preparing for a hard conversation, or just chatting. You can type or talk, on the web at pi.ai or in the iOS and Android apps. Pi remembers details that stay true about you, such as your name, home city, food preferences, job and ongoing goals, and you can add, edit or delete those memories under Settings > Account > Manage Memories. Inflection's July 2026 announcement highlighted new tools for reminders, to-do lists and shopping, and recent iOS releases added shareable plans and Hands-free and Tap to talk voice modes. Pi runs on Inflection AI's own fine-tuned models; its help centre says you can't pick or switch the model, and that Pi doesn't support generating, uploading or editing images. Accounts are for adults 18 and over.

Pi is still live and still updated. Inflection moved much of its focus to business customers in 2024, when it said it would begin capping free Pi message volume (August) and launched Inflection for Enterprise (October). On July 21, 2026 it launched Inflection AI Labs, whose first experiment is a separate app called Pi Journeys, alongside an updated Pi with improvements to voice, conversation and memory. Its homepage now describes its focus as human-centered, emotionally intelligent AI for people and brands, and both Pi apps received updates in September 2026.

Both are free to start and both can talk by voice, but they are built for different jobs:

Pricing comparison

ChatGPT prices its paid plans per user, per month. Free ($0) gives unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image generation, voice chats, deep research and memory, limited Codex and ChatGPT Work access on desktop, and ads may appear. Go at $8/month (the US price; OpenAI localizes Go pricing in some markets) adds more messages with tools, uploads, image creation, voice chats and longer memory, and may also include ads; Codex and ChatGPT Work stay limited, as on Free. Plus at $20/month is ad-free and adds GPT-6 Astra, expanded deep research, expanded Codex usage and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile. Pro starts at $100/month with 5x Plus's usage; on September 10, 2026, OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to its 20x Pro $200 tier. Go, Plus and Pro bill monthly only. For teams, Business is $20 per user per month billed annually (2+ users) or $25 billed monthly; Enterprise is priced through sales.

Pi AI is free: the App Store lists it with no in-app purchases, Google Play lists it at $0, and pi.ai offers a free sign-up. What Inflection has flagged is usage: in August 2024 it said it would begin capping message volume for free users, while staying "committed to keeping consumer Pi available and free for anyone to experience."

What does ChatGPT's entry paid plan buy a Pi user? Go at $8 a month raises the Free limits on tools, uploads, images and voice and adds scheduled tasks, but it may still show ads and does not include GPT-6 Astra; Plus at $20 is the first ad-free plan and the first with GPT-6 Astra. For a typical pairing, one person using Pi for daily conversation and ChatGPT for work, the cost is $0 for Pi plus $96 a year on Go (12 × $8) or $240 a year on Plus (12 × $20). A two-person household on Plus pays $40 a month, or $480 a year, with nothing extra for Pi.

Bottom Line

These two work better as complements than rivals. ChatGPT (4.8/5 in our review) is the stronger fit when you need output: sourced research, file analysis, images, documents from ChatGPT Work or code from Codex, and its Free plan covers a lot before Go at $8 or Plus at $20 a month. Pi AI (4.7/5) fits when conversation is the point: someone to think out loud with by text or voice, plus reminders and to-do lists, for $0, if you are 18 or older and don't need images. Using both, Pi for check-ins and ChatGPT for the work, can cost nothing.
