What is Stable Diffusion?
Stable Diffusion is a family of openly released image models from Stability AI. Stable Diffusion 3.5, which Stability calls its most powerful image model yet, includes Large (8.1 billion parameters, built for professional use at 1 megapixel), Large Turbo (a distilled version that generates in 4 steps) and Medium (2.5 billion parameters, designed to run on consumer hardware). You download the weights from Hugging Face and run them yourself, for example in ComfyUI, or reach them through Stability's API and partners such as Replicate and Amazon Bedrock. Self-hosting is free under the Stability AI Community License for individuals and organizations with less than $1M in annual revenue; commercial users must register with Stability, and bigger businesses need a paid Enterprise license. Stability encourages fine-tuning and LoRA work, and the license says you own your outputs. Stability also sells Brand Studio, a hosted creative platform that DreamStudio's old web address now redirects to; its Core and Enterprise plans can route jobs to Stable Diffusion or to third-party models such as Nano Banana.
