What is Phind?

Phind was an AI-powered search engine designed specifically for software developers, providing direct answers to programming questions with code examples, explanations, and citations to relevant documentation. Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, Phind combined large language model reasoning with real-time web search to ground its responses in current documentation, API references, and community discussions, reducing the hallucination problem that plagues standalone LLMs answering technical questions.

Important: Phind shut down on January 16, 2026. The platform is no longer operational and new sign-ups are not possible. This review is preserved as a historical reference and to help former users find suitable alternatives. The information below describes Phind's capabilities and pricing as they existed before shutdown.

Phind's core workflow was straightforward: type a programming question, and Phind would search the web, synthesize relevant sources, and generate a detailed answer with working code examples and citations. The VS Code extension brought this directly into the development environment, enabling pair-programming-style assistance without switching to a browser. Phind's proprietary models (Phind-405B and Phind-70B) were fine-tuned specifically for coding tasks and performed competitively with GPT-4 on programming benchmarks while running faster. The Pro plan provided access to GPT-4 and Claude models alongside Phind's own models.

Before its shutdown, Phind offered a free tier with unlimited access to Phind Fast models, a Plus tier adding multi-search and deep research, a Pro tier with unlimited access to its most powerful models, and a Business plan with data exclusion from training by default. We no longer list the plan prices because they could not be re-verified after the shutdown. Phind served as an important bridge between traditional documentation search and AI-powered coding assistance, influencing how subsequent tools like Cursor, Perplexity, and GitHub Copilot Chat approach developer-focused AI search.
