What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, and in 2026 it works in three modes inside one app. Chat handles questions, brainstorming and drafts. ChatGPT Work takes a task with a clear outcome, plans it, gathers context, uses tools and returns documents, presentations, spreadsheets or PDF files you can review, refine and download. Codex adds developer tools for debugging, tests, pull request reviews and new features, on the web, in the CLI, in an IDE extension and on iOS. The models are OpenAI's own: GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI calls its most capable model, comes with Plus and Pro, and the GPT-5.6 family (Sol, Terra and Luna) covers everything from the hardest reasoning to fast, high-volume work. The free plan includes unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails. ChatGPT runs on the web, iOS and Android, with desktop apps for macOS and Windows and a Linux version in preview.

What is Genspark?

Genspark is an AI workspace built around autonomous agents. It began as an AI search engine, but in April 2025 the company chose to sunset that product and focus on Super Agent, which breaks a request into steps, chooses its tools and carries the work through to a finished result. Super Agent runs in a dedicated sandbox with a real browser and its own filesystem, can work on several tasks in parallel, and can save any workflow as a reusable skill. Around it sit AI Slides, AI Sheets, AI Docs, Genspark Code for websites, apps and games, and agents for images, video, music, audio, meeting notes and AI phone calls. AI Workspace 6.0, announced on July 20, 2026, frames the product in layers, with SecondBrain as a memory built from your email, meetings, chats, docs and apps, and GenTeam as a space where people and agents work in the same chat. Models come from several labs, including Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok. Most work is metered in credits, and the free plan tops up 100 credits a day.

ChatGPT (US prices) has a free plan and three personal tiers, billed monthly; OpenAI says it does not support annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro. Go is $8/month for more messages, uploads, image creation and voice chats, plus longer memory, though ads may appear. Plus is $20/month and adds GPT-6 Astra, expanded deep research and Codex, and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, with no ads. Pro starts at $100/month for 5x Plus's usage; on September 10, 2026, OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the 20x Pro $200 tier. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually (two or more users) or $25 billed monthly. OpenAI localizes Go pricing in some markets.

Genspark meters most work in credits, and its free plan tops up 100 credits a day. Plus is $24.99/month for 10,000 credits a month, 50 GB of AI Drive storage and commercial use rights, or $19.99 a month on annual billing, charged once a year; Genspark says annual billing saves about 20 percent and still issues credits monthly. Pro starts at $249.99/month for 125,000 credits and 1 TB of storage. Team is $30 per seat per month, billed monthly, for 2 to 150 seats with 12,000 credits and 60 GB each. Plan credits reset each billing period and do not roll over. Genspark's personal pricing page asks you to sign in, so the Plus and Pro prices here come from Genspark's own pricing guide, which lists them in US dollars; the monthly prices match its App Store in-app price list.

What the entry paid plan buys. ChatGPT Go at $8 raises Free's limits, but Codex and ChatGPT Work stay limited and ads may appear, so Plus at $20 is the tier that adds GPT-6 Astra. Genspark Plus at $24.99 buys 10,000 credits a month, core AI Chat and AI Image models at no credit cost up to a limit (flagship models use credits), and a weekly Free Quota for Standard-mode agent tasks. Genspark says Plus and Pro members who subscribed before September 18, 2026 and stay subscribed keep unlimited AI Chat and AI Image through December 31, 2026, and get the weekly Free Quota too.

Worked example: a five-person team. ChatGPT Business costs $125 a month billed monthly (5 × $25), or $100 a month on annual billing (5 × $20, $1,200 a year). Genspark Team costs $150 a month (5 × $30), billed monthly, with 12,000 credits per person. For one person, ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month with no annual option, and Genspark Plus billed annually works out to $19.99 a month, so over a year the two cost about the same.

Bottom Line

ChatGPT (4.8/5) is the simpler pick if you want one assistant for everything: unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna text chats on Free, Go at $8, GPT-6 Astra on Plus at $20, and ChatGPT Work for decks, spreadsheets and documents. Genspark (4.2/5) makes sense when deliverables are the job and you want dedicated agents plus models from several labs under one credit pool; budget for credits and consider yearly Plus at $19.99 a month. Both have free plans, so run the same real task through each before you pay.
