What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is the dominant academic integrity platform, used by over 16,000 educational institutions in more than 140 countries. Founded in 1998, it began as a plagiarism detection tool and has grown into a comprehensive academic integrity suite that includes AI writing detection, grading tools, and peer review workflows. Its plagiarism detection engine compares student submissions against the largest proprietary database in the industry: over 1.6 billion student papers, 100 billion web pages, and 200 million journal articles and books. When a paper is submitted, Turnitin generates a Similarity Report highlighting matching text with source attribution.

In April 2023, Turnitin added AI writing detection to address the rapid adoption of ChatGPT and other large language models in academic settings. The AI detector analyzes text for statistical patterns characteristic of AI-generated content, including perplexity and burstiness metrics. Turnitin claims 98% accuracy with less than 1% false positives, but this claim comes with significant caveats: the accuracy figure applies only to documents where 20% or more of the text is AI-generated, and documents under 300 words produce less reliable results. The detector can identify content from ChatGPT (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o), Claude, Gemini, and other major models, though accuracy drops to 60-85% when AI text has been manually edited or paraphrased.

The most critical thing to understand about Turnitin is its accessibility model: it is sold exclusively to educational institutions through site licenses, not to individual teachers, students, or freelancers. You cannot create a personal account and pay for access. If your school or university has a Turnitin license, you access it through your institution's learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, or Google Classroom). If your institution does not subscribe, you simply cannot use it. This institutional-only model is Turnitin's biggest differentiator from competitors like GPTZero and Originality.ai, which are available to anyone.

Turnitin's AI detection has been controversial. A Stanford study found that AI detectors broadly misclassify non-native English writing at significantly higher rates — up to 32% of non-native English essays were flagged as AI-generated. Several major institutions including Curtin University, Johns Hopkins, the University of Queensland, and multiple UC System campuses have disabled Turnitin's AI detection feature entirely due to false positive concerns. Turnitin itself warns that its AI detection scores are "probabilistic, not binary verdicts" and should not be used as the sole basis for academic misconduct decisions.
