What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative AI models and the app built around them. Adobe says the models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content and public domain material, and that it does not train them on users' personal or generated content. That is the basis of Firefly's commercially safe pitch. Read the indemnification wording carefully, though: Adobe's plans page says eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select Firefly outputs, which is narrower than blanket cover for every user.

Firefly's other advantage is where it lives. In Photoshop, Generative Fill replaces or adds content in a selected area and matches the lighting, perspective and style around it, while Generative Expand extends an image beyond its original borders. In Illustrator, Generative Recolor applies color variations to vector artwork from a prompt. The web app at firefly.adobe.com adds text-to-image, Text Effects for typography, Style Reference and Structure Reference, and text-to-video and image-to-video. Adobe's current in-house image model is Firefly Image 5, and the app also runs partner models such as Google's Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5 and FLUX.2 [pro] from Black Forest Labs, which draw down generative credits. Firefly images carry Content Credentials, C2PA metadata that records their AI origin.

What is DALL-E 3?

DALL-E 3 was OpenAI's image generation model, built into ChatGPT and reachable through the OpenAI API from 2023. It is now retired on both counts: OpenAI shut down the dall-e-3 and dall-e-2 API models on 12 May 2026 and removed the official DALL-E GPT from ChatGPT on 30 Aug 2026. OpenAI's own DALL-E 3 page is now an archived research post that points visitors to ChatGPT Images 2.0.

What DALL-E 3 did well was follow instructions. It kept to complex, multi-part prompts instead of interpreting them, which made it useful for illustrations, diagrams and marketing assets where specific elements had to land in specific places, and it rendered legible text inside images better than its rivals of the time. The workflow was conversational: you described an image, ChatGPT rewrote your prompt, and you refined the result by asking for changes. Its weak spots were aesthetic quality, which trailed Midjourney on artistic and photorealistic work, and safety filters that refused many prompts other generators handled.

Its job has moved. In ChatGPT, image generation now runs on ChatGPT Images 2.0, introduced on 21 April 2026 and available on every tier including the free one, with an editor for changing part of an image and an aspect ratio picker. Developers use the GPT Image models (gpt-image-2, gpt-image-1.5, gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini), which are billed per million tokens rather than per image.

Free costs $0 and gives free daily generations across image, video and audio, but Adobe does not publish the daily count. Firefly Standard is $9.99/mo with 2,000 generative credits a month, Pro $19.99/mo with 4,000, Pro Plus $49.99/mo with 10,000 and Premium $199.99/mo with 50,000 plus unlimited use of the Firefly Video Model in Generate Video. Team licences carry the same headline price per licence but are billed annually and charged monthly. Creative Cloud Pro, $69.99/mo on the annual plan billed monthly, includes 4,000 Firefly credits.

DALL-E 3 has no price, because it cannot be bought. What its job costs today depends on how you used it. In ChatGPT, ChatGPT Images 2.0 comes with every plan, and these are monthly prices: Free at $0 with limited and slower image generation, Go at $6/mo, Plus at $20/mo, where Images with thinking starts, and Pro from $120/mo. Through the API, the GPT Image models are priced per million tokens rather than per image: gpt-image-2 at $8 input and $30 output, and gpt-image-1-mini at $2.50 input and $8 output, with batch rates at half of each. The two price lists do not line up directly: Firefly credits are an image and video pool inside Adobe's apps, while a ChatGPT plan bundles image generation with the chatbot.
