What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative AI models, designed specifically for commercial safety and integration into professional creative workflows. Unlike Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion, which were trained on web-scraped data of uncertain copyright status, Firefly is trained exclusively on licensed Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain material. This training approach means every image generated by Firefly is commercially safe to use, and Adobe offers IP indemnification on top of that. Read the wording carefully though: Adobe's own plans page says eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select Firefly outputs. It is not blanket cover for every user or every generation.

Firefly's key strategic advantage is its deep integration across the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem. In Photoshop, Generative Fill lets you select any area and replace or extend it with AI-generated content that matches lighting, perspective, and style. Generative Expand extends images beyond their original borders, turning a portrait into a landscape or adding space for text. In Illustrator, Text to Pattern and Generative Recolor create vector patterns and apply color variations to complex artwork with a single prompt. Adobe Express uses Firefly for text-to-image generation, template creation, and quick design tasks. These in-app integrations mean creative professionals can use generative AI without leaving their existing tools.

The standalone Firefly web app at firefly.adobe.com provides text-to-image generation, text effects (applying textures and styles to typography), style references (uploading a reference image to guide the generation style), structure references (maintaining the composition of an uploaded image while changing its content), and generative match for brand consistency. The platform now includes text-to-video and image-to-video generation, and Adobe has turned Firefly into a front end for other companies' models as well as its own. Adobe's current in-house image model is Firefly Image 5; alongside it the app lists Google's Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5, FLUX.2 [pro] from Black Forest Labs, Runway, Luma AI, Kling AI and Topaz Astra for video, and ElevenLabs for audio. Those partner models draw down generative credits.

In the market, Firefly occupies the "safe and integrated" position. It does not match Midjourney's artistic quality or Flux's photorealism for standalone image generation. Where it wins is the combination of commercial safety, IP indemnification, Content Credentials (C2PA metadata tagging AI-generated content), and smooth integration into the tools that millions of creative professionals already use daily. For agencies, enterprises, and any business that needs legally defensible AI imagery, Firefly is the clear choice.

Firefly runs on generative credits. Every paid tier gets unlimited access to standard image features like Generative Fill, so credits are really what video and the third-party partner models draw down. The individual plans below are billed monthly. The matching team licences carry the same headline price per licence but are billed annually and charged monthly.

• Free, $0, no plan needed. Adobe gives free daily generations across image, video and audio on a curated set of models (it names Nano Banana and Luma Ray3.14) and the limits refresh every day. This is a free plan, not a trial, but Adobe does not publish the daily count anywhere, so you cannot budget against it.
• Firefly Standard, $9.99/mo billed monthly, 2,000 generative credits/month, unlimited access to standard image features like Generative Fill, up to 20 five-second videos.
• Firefly Pro, $19.99/mo billed monthly, 4,000 generative credits/month, up to 40 five-second videos.
