What is Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot embeds AI directly into the applications where knowledge workers spend their day. In Word, it drafts documents, rewrites sections, and summarizes content. In Excel, it analyzes data, creates formulas, generates charts, and identifies trends. In PowerPoint, it transforms documents and outlines into complete presentations with designed slides. In Outlook, it drafts emails, summarizes long threads, and prioritizes your inbox. In Teams, it summarizes meetings, captures action items, and generates meeting recaps for those who missed calls.

The free Copilot Chat (formerly Bing Chat) provides a general-purpose AI assistant with web search, image generation via DALL-E, and code assistance, accessible at copilot.microsoft.com or through Windows. The standalone Copilot Pro plan (previously $20/mo) has been retired for new consumer subscribers: Microsoft closed sign-ups in late 2025 and existing Pro subscribers keep the plan only until they cancel or 1 August 2026. Its perks, priority access to the latest models and Copilot inside the Microsoft 365 desktop apps, now live inside the Microsoft 365 Premium consumer subscription ($19.99/mo or $199.99/yr).

Microsoft 365 Copilot ($30/user/mo add-on, annual commitment) is the premium tier that transforms how organizations work. It connects to your Microsoft Graph, emails, documents, calendar, chats, and files, to provide contextually relevant AI assistance grounded in your organization's data. This means Copilot can draft a presentation using data from your SharePoint documents, summarize a project's email history, or find information across your entire Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Full Microsoft 365 Copilot is not bundled into the standard Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise plans: it is a separate add-on priced at $30/user/month (annual commitment) that sits on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription, the same $30/user/mo for both business and enterprise buyers. Copilot Agents allow organizations to build custom AI workflows that automate specific business processes. The platform is the natural choice for organizations already invested in Microsoft 365, offering AI capabilities without switching tools or learning new interfaces.

Microsoft Copilot Pricing

Copilot Chat (Free): General-purpose AI assistant with web search, image generation (DALL-E), and basic code assistance. Available to everyone at copilot.microsoft.com and in Windows.

Copilot Pro ($20/month), retired for new subscribers: Microsoft closed sign-ups to the standalone consumer Pro plan in late 2025. Adds Microsoft Graph grounding, Copilot Agents, enterprise security, and compliance controls. The add-on is $30/user/mo for both business and enterprise customers.
