What is Slack AI?

Slack AI brings native artificial intelligence directly into the Slack messaging platform, built by Salesforce (which acquired Slack in 2021 for $27.7 billion). Rather than requiring teams to switch to a separate AI tool, Slack AI embeds summarization, search intelligence, and workflow automation into the app where teams already communicate. It launched in February 2024 and has become one of the most tightly integrated workplace AI features on the market.

The core value proposition is reducing information overload. Channel Recaps generate AI summaries of channel activity over any time period, letting you catch up on what you missed in seconds rather than scrolling through hundreds of messages. Thread Summaries condense long discussion threads into key points and decisions. Search Answers uses AI to find and synthesize answers from your entire Slack workspace history, surfacing relevant messages, files, and conversations across channels you have access to.

In 2025, Slack restructured its AI packaging significantly. The standalone $10/user/mo AI add-on was discontinued for new customers. Basic AI features, covering summaries, Slackbot, workflow generation, natural-language search, daily recaps, and file summaries, are now included in every Slack plan, including the free tier. The Business+ ($15/user/mo annual) and Enterprise+ tiers differentiate with Slackbot as a personal AI agent: they get ongoing access, while Free and Pro get a limited trial experience. All AI processing stays within your organization's Slack workspace boundaries, with no data used to train external models.

Slack AI's key differentiator is context. Because it operates on your actual workspace data, messages, files, channels, huddles, it can answer questions that no external AI tool could, like "What did the design team decide about the new onboarding flow?" This makes it most valuable for organizations with 50+ employees where institutional knowledge is spread across dozens of channels.

Slack AI Pricing

As of mid-2025, Slack restructured its AI pricing. The standalone $10/user/mo AI add-on is no longer available to new customers. Instead, AI features are now bundled into Slack's plan tiers, including the free tier:

• Free, $0 (free forever): Basic AI including summaries, a limited trial of Slackbot, workflow generation, search, daily recaps, and file summaries
• Pro, $8.75/user/mo (monthly) or $7.25/user/mo (annual): The same basic AI feature set as Free, still with the limited Slackbot trial
• Business+, $15/user/mo (annual) or $18/user/mo (monthly): All basic AI plus ongoing access to Slackbot as a personal AI agent
• Enterprise+, custom pricing: All Business+ AI features plus enterprise security, compliance, and admin controls

Existing customers who purchased the $10/user/mo AI add-on were grandfathered until their first renewal after August 2025, after which they must choose a new plan tier. The practical effect: basic AI now comes with every plan, including Free, but ongoing access to Slackbot as a personal AI agent still requires Business+ at minimum.
